Karim Koumbassa is a talented and versatile drummer and dancer from Guinea, West Africa. He is director of Seattle's One World Dance & Drum performance group and has worked extensively with some of the most renowned artists from his country such as Mamady Keita and Youssouf Koumbassa.
Since arriving in America in May 2005, Karim has performed with many incredible African artists such as balaphonist Naby Camara, djembefolas Karamba Diabate, Bolokada Conde, Muhamed Camara and guitarist and vocalist Alpha Yaya Diallo. Karim has also performed with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra and The Northwest Girls Choir. Committed to sharing and expressing the beauty of his native culture, he travels all over the United States and Canada performing, teaching and providing educational workshops and residencies to children and adults alike. Karim's intimate relationship with rhythm and time coupled with his profound passion for music make him an incredible musician, dancer and inspiring teacher.

Moustapha Bangoura hails from the West African nation of Guinea. He is a 22-year veteran of the largest and most celebrated dance company from the continent of Africa - Les Ballets Africains The internationally acclaimed master dancer, drummer, and choreographer has traveled the globe bringing the colorful musical performance traditions of his homeland to audiences worldwide. Moustapha's mission is to continue to share his expertise while preserving the richness and authenticity of the culture. He is recognized for his thorough and charismatic technique that is deeply rooted in tradition.

This intensive class taught by Andrea focuses a medley of the beautiful and powerful dances from the lower, western coast of Guinea. Come share the joy and passion of West African culture through music and dance, get a fantastic work out and connect with a supportive and encouraging community of people.

This class will give dancers the unique opportunity to prepare for and perform in LCC's "Collaborations" a full blown dance production held February 24th-26th in a fully equipped 500 seat auditorium with professional staging, tech and artistic support. Dancers enjoy and grow into stronger dancers through the positive challenge of the 3 night performance in a supportive and encouraging environment.
This intensive class will also help dancers better understand how the music and the dance go together so that they can better feel the music and fluidly move to the beat, gain confidence, develop personal style, recognize and respond to all of the various musical signals, create smooth transitions between dance steps, have more confidence to improvise and add accents to movements in solo circles and ease through rapid moves and regular tempo movements while increasing strength, stamina, flexibility and positive muscle memory.

We encourage everyone of all levels to attend because this is going to be a fabulous class with very positive dance outcomes for those who take it. Additionally, there is an opportunity to perform with authentic, West African artists in “Creating Community” performance Saturday, October 23rd @ Agate Hall.
Alseny has such amazing strength, stamina and power that he just embodies this dance perfectly and not only inspires students to push themselves and become better, stronger dancers, but is able to give concrete techniques to help dancers reach their peak potential.

Join Alseny Yansane, as he teaches this art-form which is the perfect embodiment of simultaneous rhythm and movement! Whether you are a complete beginner or an experienced drummer and/or dancer Alseny will teach you how to coordinate your movements and synchronize your dance steps to the music that you yourself are creating. Alseny breaks down the different parts into comprehensible sub-parts, building the layers by progressively adding more dimension and dynamism until participants
have built up a full on dance and drum orchestra!
